Popular commentators show signs of amnesia when they portray ex- FBI Directors Robert Mueller and James Comey as incredible and firm law enforcement symbols. Maybe if they incorporared J. Edgar Hoover, such praise night be put into the right perspective.
Even though these Hoover successors, now taking over the center stage in the probe of President Trump, have been praised for their amazing character by many of Official Washington, the reality is, as leading law enforcement officials of the George W. Bush Administration (Mueller as FBI Director and James Comey as Deputy Attorney General), the equally presided over post-9/11 cover-ups and hidden Constitution abuses, allowed Bush-Cheney fabrications used to start scary wars, and displayed plain simple incompetence.
A Long History of Failure
A long time before he was appointed FBI Director, serious questions were asked about Mueller’s role as Acting U.S. Attorney in Boston in efficiently allowing decades of corruption and concealing of the FBI’s illicit arrangements with mobster Whitey Bulger and additional “top echelon” informants who committed numerous homicides and criminal offences. FBI Director Mueller was the leading official handling the Anthrax terror fiasco investigation into those 2001 murders, which targeted a blameless man (Steven Hatfill).
Deputy Attorney General James Comey, as well, played along with the misuses of Bush and Cheney after 9/11 and signed off numerous very illegitimate programs involving warrantless supervision of Americans and captives torture.
The Myth of Comey/Mueller
What is not still known to us is that Comey’s and Mueller’s joint initiative to prevent Bush’s men from pressuring the ill Attorney General to sign the certification that evening was a short-lived instance.
Mueller was even okay with the CIA carrying out torture programs after his own agents cautioned against taking part.. Not did the surveillance and brutal programs proceed, but Mueller’s (and then Comey’s) FBI later were trying to prosecute NSA and CIA whistleblowers who exposed these violations.
It appears clear that according to his history and close “partnership” with Comey, referred as“one of the closest working relationships the top ranks of the Justice Department have ever seen,” Mueller was elected as Special Counsel not due to his integrity but since he will do what the powerful instruct him to do.
